New Signing Billy Jones Is Aiming For Success With Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham Town have this afternoon completed the signing of left back Billy Jones and he has told www.ctfc.com that he is aiming for success.

Billy, 29, rejected the opportunity to sign a new contract with former club Exeter City to link up with Mark Yates and the Robins and the experience left back explained that a move to Gloucestershire was the right move for him.

"Exeter wasn't the right move for me but I knew Cheltenham was after speaking with Mark Yates," he explained.

"It all happened really quickly because I got the phone call just five days ago. It is all done and dusted now which is good and I really can't wait to get started."

Jones suffered relegation from npower League Two last season with Exeter City but chose to sign a two year contract with Cheltenham Town rather than stick around at St. James' Park. The former Leyton Orient and Crewe defender has been handed squad number 3 and he admitted that first team football was integral to him signing a deal.

"I'm 29 now and playing first team football is important to me," he said.

"I played well towards the end of last season with Exeter but to be honest I want a bit of success now and Cheltenham was the right move for me. I'm looking forward to kicking on in pre-season and getting the season started."

The experienced left back started his career with Leyton Orient's youth system and went on to make his debut in the 2000-01 campaign. He signed a full contract in the summer of 2001 and went on to make over 90 appearances for the club before moving on to Kidderminster Harriers.

He made just a handful of appearances before joining Exeter City and making nearly 100 appearances during his two seasons with the club. He then moved to Crewe for a reported £65,000 deal on a three year contract. He made over 80 appearances for the Railwaymen before moving back to Exeter City for a second spell in npower League One. Over 50 appearances in two seasons for the Grecians finally led to the defender leaving St. James' Park this summer and signing a two year Cheltenham Town contract at the training ground this afternoon.
