A first half goal from Harry Pell was enough to see Cheltenham upset Charlton in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Both the Robins and the Addicks lined up in 4-4-2 formations going into the match, with Cranston and Waters replacing Jennings and Rowe from the weekend's fixture.

The game kicked off in an entertaining fashion with Charlton having a goal ruled out for offside through Ajose, before Cheltenham suffered the same fate when Wright thought he'd scored, only for the flag to up again.

Cheltenham's pressure was mounting, with Holman having a shot just cleared off the line. The pressure finally told when a long throw from O'Shaughnessy fell at the feet of Pell who blasted home from close range for his first of the season.

Charlton's efforts to get back into the game were being nullified by the solid Cheltenham backline as Lookman's fierce drive was blocked by O'Shaughnessy. 

It was still the Robins who had the better of the chances though. Wright chopped past Konsa firing low but Rudd was equal to his effort, with Waters putting the rebound just past the post.

Charlton's best chance of the half was put wide by Ajose from point blank range, after Holmes pulled the ball back from the byline.

It was all Charlton after the interval as they pushed for an equaliser. O'Shaughnessy nearly turned into his own net from a Holmes cross. A rare break from Cheltenham resulted in Whitehead being fouled 25 yards from goal. Step up Harry Pell... whose effort was straight at Rudd.

Ahearne-Grant, who replaced the threatening Holmes, fired wide from 15 yards out with time running out for Charlton to find a reply to Pell's first-half goal. 

Chances were few and far between in the second half, with Cheltenham's back four remaining strong in testing times.

A triple substitution from Cheltenham brought Jennings, Barthram and Rowe into the game in place of Cranston, Waters and Morgan Smith in an attempt to freshen up tired legs.

Elation rung round the ground at the final whistle as Cheltenham progressed through to the second round of the EFL Cup!
